The White House Gingerbread House

Every year the White House goes through an extensive transformation for the Holidays and every year the White House pastry chef builds a gingerbread house for the First Family. Here are some facts about it along with photos from this year and years past.

2009 White House Gingerbread House

  • It took pastry chef Bill Yosses about 6 weeks to plan and construct it
  • It weighs 390 lbs (250 pounds of white chocolate and 140 of gingerbread)
  • It is 56 inches long and 29 inches high
  • It is based on White House architect James Hoban’s original design
  • It has a real brass light fixture that works (a dollhouse light, and LED)
  • Everything in the house is edible with the exception of the light
  • It sits in the State Dining Room
  • The Nixons started the tradition in 1969

Each year they add a family touch to it:
